The 2025 edition of the Global Executive Research is here - offering a clear-eyed view into the state of retail leadership worldwide. Now in its third year, this report from the Ebeltoft Group, developed in collaboration with the World Retail Congress, shares the perspectives of more than 100 senior retail executives navigating a fast-changing global retail landscape.
From business model reinvention to the future of physical stores, the message is clear: transformation is not optional. Consumer behavior continues to shift rapidly, and while most leaders remain optimistic about their own businesses, nearly one in six say fundamental change is needed to remain competitive.
Technology and talent are at the centre of the conversation. AI is high on the agenda, but skill gaps and legacy systems are holding many back. Hiring remains a major hurdle - particularly in-store and across IT - while sustainability is climbing the priority list, fueled by evolving regulations and rising expectations.
This year’s findings were captured just before the announcement of new U.S. trade tariffs, a policy shift that could further disrupt retail supply chains and pricing strategies in the months ahead.
Even in the face of economic and operational pressure, one thing is clear: the industry is resilient. Retailers are adapting, investing, and moving forward. Use this report as your benchmark, your reality check, and your spark for what’s next.
