Retail pay barely budges amid 'tight margins, sluggish consumer confidence'

Retailers battling tight margins are still cutting jobs and losing their best-paid workers, dragging average pay growth down to just 1%, the sector's peak body says. Retail NZ's 2026 Wages Guide puts the average retail wage at $30.94 an hour, up 1% on last year, a marked drop from the 3.4% increase recorded a year earlier.

Woolworths explores facial recognition technology for Aussie stores

Woolworths has been running a trial of facial recognition technology at its New Zealand office, as the supermarket giant explores using it in its Australian stores. The technology had been tested at its support office in Auckland.

Opportunities include standalone stores and brand-led concepts, alongside partnerships which connect New Zealand producers with experienced retailers.

These promotions are also not just about getting people into stores and encouraging them to spend more money, but are tapping into our “deep-seated desire to collect items and achieve a sense of completion by obtaining every item in a set”.



Signs of an economic rebound should buoy retailers

Retailers can expect a more favourable trading environment ahead as recent studies show inflation in the country is easing.

The positive outlook coincides with new retail spending data showing a strong improvement in July.
