Fankery Review: A Sweet Little Gem in Newmarket

When we heard that Fankery, one of Auckland’s most distinctive new bakeries, had moved beyond its cult-favourite pop-ups to open a permanent store right in our neighbourhood, we couldn’t get there fast enough. And after a bit of a detour (note: there’s a York Street in both Parnell and Newmarket - who knew?), we finally found it near the charming, cobbled laneways of Osborne Lane, nestled amongst some of New Zealand’s top designers and boutique food spots.

Founded by electrical engineer turned baker Cathy Fan, Fankery is anything but ordinary. It offers a creative fusion of nostalgic Shanghainese flavours with modern baking techniques. Specialising in mochi-filled cakes, gooey cookies, and delicate tarts, each treat is a carefully crafted experience. Fankery’s creations are a dream of textures — soft, chewy, crisp, and creamy all in one bite.

The store itself is small, more of a luxe pop-in than a sit-down café, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in personality and flavour. With a minimal yet thoughtfully styled interior in Fankery’s signature colours, and just enough room for a coffee machine and a curated display of treats, it feels like a hidden treasure. And it truly is.

We tried the Biscoff cheesecake - a decadent, rich slice that beautifully balances the warm spiced flavour of Lotus Biscoff with a smooth, silky finish. Alongside it, the Salted Caramel Tart was a standout. Its crisp buttery base, mochi-soft centre, and just the right touch of salt delivered a perfect mix of comfort and surprise. Every item here is clearly designed to delight both the eye and the palate.
