Surcharges on in-store payments to be banned

The Minister of Commerce has announced the Government’s intention to ban surcharging for all domestic in-person debit and credit payments. This will entail an amendment to the Retail Payments Act and is targeted to come into force by May 2026. This follows the announcement of the interchange fee caps which will be in place from 1 December 2025.



New World Birkenhead introduces reverse vending Machine for recycling

New World Birkenhead has launched its first reverse vending machine, encouraging locals to recycle bottles and cans while supporting local schools. The trial, in partnership with TOMR, aims to test Kiwi recycling behaviour ahead of a nationwide container return scheme.



Jeweller Sir Michael Hill dies aged 86

Sir Michael Hill, founder of Michael Hill Jeweller, has passed away at age 86 following a battle with cancer. A visionary entrepreneur and philanthropist, Hill built the brand from a single store in Whangārei into a global jewellery business across NZ, Australia, and Canada. A private memorial will be held in Arrowtown.



Capital raise helps Paper Plus co-op out of jam

Paper Plus NZ has returned to profitability for the first time in four years, reporting a $218,000 net profit after tax for FY25. The turnaround follows a successful capital raise from members and renegotiation of bank borrowing terms with BNZ. Cost-cutting measures, including reduced wages and marketing spend, also contributed to the result. While not all capital was raised as initially planned, the $700k secured helped satisfy the bank’s requirements. The co-op plans to focus on online growth and tighter cost control to maintain positive cash flow into FY26.


Tesla opens 24-hour ‘retro-futuristic’ diner in L.A. with seating for 250

Elon Musk’s Tesla has opened a restaurant in Hollywood, Calif. that combines classic American diner food, "megascreens" for movie viewing and charging for Tesla and non-Tesla drivers alike.



Noel Leeming criminally charged over alleged breaches of Fair Trading Act

Noel Leeming faces criminal charges for allegedly misleading customers with its “Price Promise” promotion. The Commerce Commission claims it was difficult to redeem and breached the Fair Trading Act. Noel Leeming denies wrongdoing and will defend the charges.



Foodstuffs North Island, Gilmours face court over alleged cartel conduct

The commission said it had investigated agreements signed by FSNI and Gilmours with a national grocery supplier, regarding the supply of products to a hospitality customer.
